February 27, 2021 Update... SUBSCRIPTION BOXES NOW OPEN TO ALL JFW MEMBERS.  

Everyone is invited to join in on the fun!  The PT Cruiser subscriptions boxes are now open for purchase by all JFW members (Wardens at any level as well as adults).  Only 50 boxes left for purchase!!

Canoe Paddling Certifications

First another reminder about our two Canoe Certification trips that are booked for this summer with Connie and Ingo.  Registration deadlines will be 2 weeks before the event, but PLEASE register as soon as possible to avoid events being cancelled.  Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at event@yellowheadjfw.ca 

July 25 to July 28 - Beginner Canoe Certification

August 22 to August 25 - Intermediate Canoe Certification

More details can be found on the YRC registration page, both events are open to 16 and up, or ages 12-15 for mature wardens who are accompanied by an adult.

A note from Connie and Ingo about these trips

The North Saskatchewan river from the Brierly Rapids at the Historic Site campground to Highway 2A bridge is the very best place in all of Alberta to learn beginner river canoe paddling skills.  I have taught canoe river skills courses there since I was a university grad student and we just did a JFW river skills course there last summer and it totally rocked.  Everyone learned so much because the river current is very easy and forgiving, there are really strong, distinct eddy lines to work on skills entering and exiting the current both river right and left, including the famous huge "20 boat eddy" which is the best "classroom" ever, and there is also a great tributary river confluence at the Clearwater to work on "joining current" skills, and we can paddle up the Clearwater to do our river rescues in a super safe river environment with a very slow current and great places to tip, swim, and practice throw bag rescues and T-rescues.  It doesn't get any better for river canoe skills training and there are even hot showers and flush toilets at the campgrounds.

There will be two paintball events, one in the summer and one in the fall, dates are coming out as soon as we can get them confirmed, hoping to have open to ages 10 and up

TAC Camp (Trailblazer Advanced Camp)

Oct 3-6 at Narrow Lake

- Option 1 - 3 day camp, which includes full day of water instruction and activities on the Friday

- Option 2 - 2 day camp, regular TAC camp, with focus on master of basic skills and opportunity to build and sleep in a shelter

Bowron Lakes Canoe Circuit

July 16-27, 2019

Let’s step back in time to the era of the gold rush at Barkerville, British Columbia.  Here we will tour the old mining town and see the impact of mining in the area.  We will also test our paddling abilities when we embark on this world renown canoe circuit in a remote wilderness setting.  We will use both our flatwater and moving water skills in the 116 km circuit which is made up of 10 lakes connected with rivers, includes 10 km of portages.  Participants will learn how to “read” the water, set up camp, be responsible for all their basic first aid requirements and participate in the preparation of meals and clean-up. The area is prone to sudden changes in weather, so weather watching this is another skill the participants will need to develop.  If you purchase a fishing license you might be able to catch your supper too! 

Space is limited for this amazing adventure - we only have room for 15 participants in this program.  The cost will be $265/person, which will include transportation, canoe and wheel rental, food, camping fees along the way and admission to Barkerville.  It includes two days to travel to and from the location and 7 days of great adventure paddling in a very remote location. This adventure is for experienced and confident paddlers only and for those who are comfortable in a wilderness location where emergency rescue could be days away 

Mark this event in your calendar and watch for registration to open later on this spring.  You will be required to provide the committee with detailed resume of your paddling experience.

Airdrie Hawks 35th Anniversary

On May 5th, the Airdrie Hawks celebrated the club's 35 Year Anniversary out at Jumping Pound Camp. The day was filled with games, cake and a red shirt dinner with many special guests in attendance.  Thank you to everyone past and present that has made the Airdrie Hawks such a success!

Woodlanders 20th Anniversary Camp March 9-11

The Meadow Lake Woodlanders Junior Forest Wardens are celebrating their 20th year!

JFW families and JFW Alumni are invited to join in the fun at our family camp, March 9-11 2018, at the beautiful Camp Oshkidee on Jeanette Lake in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park (Not far from the site of National Camp 2014)

Please bring along your camp chair, an umbrella in case of rain, and your favourite recollections, stories or songs to share.We encourage you to wear the uniform or emblems of the organization where you got to know Larry (JFW, Elks, Sask Environment...)
We know that many of you have fond memories of Larry and we would like to hear them. Please send your favorite stories, photos, and recollections to treemail@ajfwa.ca, or bring them along. We will compile these into a special tribute book.

Join us April 22-23 at the Hall at Big Stone Park for our AGM, and have your say in the business of the organization.  This is the site of the 2017 National Camp, and a chance for you to see the site first hand, so you will know what to expect when you and your club arrives in July!

This will be a "relaxed" weekend, light on programming, although we will have activities for wardens during the annual general meeting.

Campsite fee $10 per unit per night.  AJFWA is covering the camping fees for the unserviced sites.

Friday arrival is fine.  Bring your own accommodation and food.

National Camp 2017 - Help Raise Funds!

National Camp 2017 is rapidly approaching and your organizing committee is hard at work planning for a week of learning, playing and enjoying.

As the Chairman of the Fund-raising Committee, my goal is to make this event as affordable for all of our members as we can. 

In order to do this we are actively seeking grants from the private and public sector.  In the past, one of our greatest source of fundraising was donations, sponsorship or in kind donations from businesses in our different communities who understand the value of our clubs.

For this reason, I have created the following letter templates in hopes that you will provide them to any business contact that you may have to canvass whether they would support our great group.  Employers also often have grant / donation programs available for the organizations that their members volunteer with, this may be a source for you as well. 

No donation is too small.  In the past we have been able to raise upwards of $20,000 from the $200, $500, $1000 donations from our local businesses.  In most cases, someone had a contact and could make this request on a personal level which enhances our chances of success.

You will find two sample letters on the website: (sign-in required, contact us if you need assistance)

• the first is for general donations and 

• the second addresses any corporate or other groups who would like to support a specific portion of our camp.  

This sponsored portion would be named after the donor and specific mention would be made for them around that event.

The letters are in word format and will allow you to personalize who the letter is being sent to and will allow for your signature at the bottom of the letter as part of our expanded fund committee.

We, as a Committee hope that you will be willing to help your camp be successful; and all moneys gathered will go to  improving the camp and reducing the access fee to members.  Thank you in advance for your help!

The Wardens, weather, and wood (W3) all cooperated in producing another successful event. Light snow in the afternoon and evening ensured the fire hazard was minimal. The snow level at the site was not deep enough for anyone to get stuck, which made things easier but reduced the entertainment value.

This year we thought that before, during and after pictures might tell a better story. There were no marshmallows but the fireworks were quite spectacular for the 15 participants at Shingle Hill. Even the dogs had a good time, but they’re a little hard of hearing now. ☺

For many of us, there is no better way to bring in the New Year!

We look forward to seeing you on December 31, 2017 when we can do it again!

National Camp Silent Auction: We are trying something new for this National Camp 2017! Please make an effort to make something or reuse something for Silent Auction: it could be gently-used camping gear, outdoor books, a lesson plan for club night, make a quilt, mittens, hat, bag to carry gear, bag for hotdog sticks, something out of wood - anything which you have put effort into making and which you think would benefit another JFW individual. You could be passing on neat toys for younger wardens, games, potholders, you get the gist!

Our aim is to avoid having the Dollar Store be the winner at this auction (sometimes members will go buy an item for $15, but it only brings $7 at the Auction).
This year, let’s make an effort to make this Silent Auction personal and useful, and environmentally friendly!

We know that many of our members already do this, but for those new to JFW, this is the plan for 2017. Thanks so much for all your contributions in past years and the efforts you will make for this year!!

Jumping Pound - 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award

Jumping Pound Camp Award

It is our tradition this time of year to present the Jumping Pound Volunteer of the Year award to a deserving recipient who has made a long-standing and significant contribution to the evolution of our JFW Camp.

The award is in its 7th year, and for the first time it has been presented to a family rather than an individual.

The award was presented December 3 at the JFW Christmas Tree lot to the Ager family – Ron, Lee, George and Annika, who have been in camp development mode from the very beginning.


As Kelly Hunt, the previous winner, has stated: It will not get you free beer at the Legion, however, it will serve to remind them that their efforts are appreciated and their contributions recognized.

By presenting this award, the committee on behalf of the entire JFW community, are saying thank you and we hope to continue exploiting their time and talents in the future. (years and years and years to come)
